Back to Christmas Films
"John, when you're kissing me, don't talk about
plumbing."
Sparkling like
a Christmas morning
glass of champagne, a screwball comedy from 1945 that's a joy from
start to
finish.
Barbara
Stanwyck is wonderful as the magazine columnist
Elizabeth Lane, whose carefully constructed fictional lifestyle is
gatecrashed by her editor and returning war hero Dennis
Morgan.
Their
trials and tribulations are great fun and the conclusion satisfying.
It's silly, frothy and just a little bit serious with
its wry glance at aspirational 'life style' – and it's all carried
off with an assured touch. It's still pretty topical, as we've yet to
shake off anxieties over how genuine or phoney our lifestyle choices
are.
A little known
classic (in the UK at
least) that deserves to be a Christmas standard.
By all
accounts, the remake from 1992, directed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, is
to be avoided. And oh yikes, a check at IMDB
and Wikipedia
turns up a
worrying hint that it's going to be remade in 2009. Whoever you are –
DON'T DO IT!
The DVD is currently in
stock at PlayTrade - although it is currently only released
as a Region 1 DVD. So you'll need a multi-region player (or some kind
of technical competence!) if you're in the UK.
