October

October

General things to do this month:

  • Buy fruit and veg and raid your garden produce to make jams, jellies, chutneys, oils and vinegars.

  • Keep an eye out for any sloes still around for making sloe gin.

  • Look out for quinces, particularly windfalls, for making membrillo, sweets, quince jelly or quince vodka

  • Gather conkers to use in seasonal games and crafts

  • Plan your Christmas gift list (if you haven't done so already!) to give yourself plenty of time to make home-made presents

  • Start looking around in charity and second-hand shops for bits & pieces that you could use as part of your Christmas gift giving

  • Start (or carry on with) your Christmas treat fund

  • Go for a look around your local department store to get ideas for homespun presents

  • October is a good time to make your Christmas cake

Dates for the diary:

Throughout October - CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) organise various events for their 'Cider Month', to encourage more people to drink real cider and perry

21 October - Apple Day - celebrate one of the UK's best-loved fruits at one of many events around the country

31 October - Celebrate Hallowe'en - buy a pumpkin or a large swede and make a jack o' lantern & play some traditional games like apple bobbing.

(Back to May - September - coming soon)                                                              Forward to November
