A Homespun Manifesto

The philosophy here at Christmas Matters is that you can have abundance without excess. Christmas is a time to use your creativity, share your talents to make special gifts & to decorate your home. Some people think homespun equals cheapskate,Crib scene but we think that homemade presents are much more a reflection of the life-enhancing spirit of Christmas than the latest designer gewgaw.

Obviously no one is daft enough to turn up their noses at a thoughtfully chosen shop-bought gift, but there is nothing more wonderful than receiving a present made especially for you, with thought, time, care & love.  It's also great for the giver who can learn new skills, cut down on their shopping trips & bills & really get into being creative.  When it comes to decorations there is something really fulfilling about being able to beautify your home with your own efforts. Kids can get really involved too - this is the sort of thing they love.

Homespun Gifts

We've divided our ideas for gifts into 2 main sections - homespun gifts & food & drink. There are also loads of ideas for homemade cards & wrapping paper.

Before you jump in - some words of advice:

  • don't make Christmas preparations too stressful for yourself - if you want to do some homespun magic then leave yourself plenty of time - there is nothing worse than being up at 2am on Christmas morning trying to finish a gift.

  • start planning early - some of the food & drink ideas need to be started back in June...

Homespun Decorations

This is where you can really let your imagination run wild... & get the whole family involved. You can be as sophisticated, as opulent, as retro, as baroque, as over the top, as restrained.... well, you get the picture. We have ideas for the tree & for decorating the home.
